Wide-ranging wildlife and unusual scenery in remote southern Tanzania. This Tanzania Southern Parks 10 Days Safari Itinerary traditional camping safari explores the best of southern Tanzania, a vastly different experience to a safari in the north of the country.
This trip is all about game viewing, and our safari starts with the truly wild scenery of Selous, Africa’s largest wildlife reserve. We do not have the massive migration here but the wildlife will not disappoint: large populations of hippo and crocodiles, and small numbers of the endangered black rhino. The wide Rufiji River bisects the reserve, and our safari is not just by 4WD, it is also by boat and on foot. We travel overland to Mikumi National Park, where we stop for a couple of days of game viewing before continuing to Ruaha. Tanzania’s second largest park, Ruaha straddles ‘southern’ and ‘eastern’ Africa, so the animal and bird life here are second to none.
Tanzania Southern Parks 10 Days Safari Itinerary
After arrival, the rest of the day is free to relax after your flight, or to explore the city
Leaving Dar-es-Salaam early we head out to start our safari experience, proceeding to Selous Game Reserve with a packed lunch. This is a 4.5 hour drive, driving on a tarmac road for the first 150 km. We come to a small village called Kibiti where we turn off this main road and here the real Africa starts. The road is gravel and in the wet season, filled with water. On arrival at the campsite, we find complete bush, cleared enough to camp. From our tents we will see nothing but the flowing plains of the Selous Game Reserve. On game drives we will get the chance to see the Rufiji River, with hippos popping there heads above the water and crocodiles gracefully wading in the current. There will be time for an optional boat safari from the time we arrive until dinner is served.
Day 3 – 4
We now have two full days in Selous. Each day after a hearty breakfast, we will depart for a full day game drive with a packed lunch. We will get to see a variety of game, hopfully including the African hunting dog, and drive through different terrain, bush, savannah and miombo woodland. Selous, Africa’s largest wildlife sanctuary with an area of 54,600 sq.km, is bigger than Denmark and 4 times the size of the Serengeti. It has the world’s largest number of big game – elephant, buffalo, rhino, and Sable antelope. Selous is also home to wildebeest, eland, giraffe, waterbuck, zebra, impala, hippo, leopard and lion. There are about 350 species of birdlife. We will return to camp late evening for a hot dinner.
After breakfast we proceed to Mikumi National Park. Mikumi is a small park but none the less, game is plentiful, and the mkata plains provide spectacular viewing. We will stop en route to Mikumi to have our packed lunch. Afternoon game drive in Mikumi National Park.
After breakfast, we depart for Ruaha with our packed lunch. Ruaha, with an area of 10,300sq.km, is the second largest park, and second largest elephant sanctuary in Tanzania. The great Ruaha River, which flows along its entire eastern border, creating spectacular gorges and scenery, features a large number of hippos and crocodiles. The wide variety of animals in this park includes Greater and Lesser Kudu, and Roan and Sable Antelope. Birdlife is also rich, with over 370 species recorded. We camp tonight just outside the park.
Day 7 – 8
We enjoy two full days game drive in Ruaha. Ruaha has got arguably the best scenery in the southern safari sector with rivers, plains and forests. Back to camp for dinner and overnight.
Leaving the Ruaha area, we head east again back into Mikumi National Park for more game drives.
We enjoy a final morning game drive, and then depart back to Dar-es-Salaam with a packed lunch. We will have a day room booked in the hotel (until 18hrs) for people to freshen up before the flight home.
